A fully packed two-bedroom apartment may move faster than a partially packed one-bedroom apartment. A three-bedroom home with excellent access may move faster than a smaller apartment with elevator restrictions and long hallways. Every move has its own unique variables.
The Biggest Factors That Affect Move Duration
Size of the Move
More belongings require more labor. Number of rooms, furniture, boxes, garage, attic, basement, and storage unit contents all affect duration.
Packing Readiness
Moves progress faster when boxes are packed, sealed, and loose items are consolidated. A fully prepared client often saves time — and saving time saves money.
Stairs & Number of Stories
Every flight of stairs adds labor and movement time. Moving from a third-floor walk-up is significantly different than a first-floor apartment.
Elevator Access
A reserved freight elevator can significantly improve efficiency. A small passenger elevator shared with residents can slow operations considerably.
Distance Between Locations
Travel distance, urban traffic, multiple pickup or delivery locations, and route complexity all play a role.
Traffic
Nobody controls traffic in the DMV. Professional planning helps — traffic remains a variable.
Weather
Rain creates slippery surfaces. Snow and ice impact travel and loading speed. Extreme heat affects physical performance and crew endurance.
Specialty Items
Safes, pianos, large exercise equipment, and antique furniture require additional planning, specialized equipment, and more deliberate handling.
